Starting with Stills
hombre_mcsteez started posting photos to Instagram in what’s become his “signature style” in early February 2014. At the beginning, his posts were still-images of his characters comp’d into real-world environments. His hand is usually clearly in frame, holding up a piece of glass or transparency, and the hashtags indicate he’s using white-out to paint the back of the “cel” and sharpie on the front as his line.

Animating the Drawings
Marty Cooper (hombre_mcsteez’s real name) started making full-blown animated pieces using the same technique he had employed in his still-frames. He later started tagging videos in the series as "AugDemented Reality", and published this video compilation of the Instagram series. hombre_mcsteez also recently finished a second short narrative video comprised of his Instagram micro-videos, entitled "MehWhoop: The Saga of the Lost String Bean"
Part of "AugDemented Reality." I love the way the dirt is animated!
Why it’s a Great Account
The thing that’s great about this account is the way it embraces the native format of Instagram – it’s shot on an iPhone and consists of easily consumable vignettes. He limits his approach to something that could be conceivably made in a matter of hours instead of days, allowing him to provide daily joy to his followers. He also embraces materials that are as old as animation itself, while employing them in a way that feels fresh – with humor and a DIY aesthetic. The icing on the cake are the great sound effects hombre_mcsteez uses to sell the interactions between his animated characters and the real-world environment they inhabit.
